| Goal: The "Good Water Neighbors" project is based on sets of cross-border partnering communities sharing a common water source, promoting environmental awareness and peace building. The goals of the project are to advance dialogue based on common water and environment issues as a means to promote common understanding, conflict resolution and the shared interest of achieving peace in general. The project involves all sectors of society: Youth sector; the project aims to empower youth "Water Trustees" to undertake concrete activities for the benefit of their respective communities (building 'eco-facilities', such as ecological gardens, rainwater harvesting systems and grey water reuse systems) and to promote their understanding on the need for cooperation. Adult sector; to create adult forums in support of cross border cooperation based on "Neighbor's Paths" tours that take the visitor through the water realities of each community, ending at an overlook of their neighboring community to learn about their water issues as well. Mayors and municipalities; to create a cross border Community "Mayors Network" in support of municipal cross border cooperation and problem solving. |

Need : |
Water and environment issues are trans-boundary by definition. The three countries, Israel, Jordan and Palestine, are completely interdependent on shared water resources. The fact that these resources are scarce and activities undertaken by one side have a direct impact on the other, creates the necessity for common understanding and cooperation.
Uniqueness : |
The "Good Water Neighbors" methodology is an original idea that is based on identifying cross border communities and utilizing their mutual dependence on shared water resources as a basis for developing dialogue and cooperation on sustainable water management. The project has created real improvement within the water sector by building trust and understanding that has led to common problem solving and peace building among communities even in the midst of conflict.

Project description : |
The "Good Water Neighbors" (GWN) project was established by EcoPeace / Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME) in 2001 to raise awareness of the shared water problems of Palestinians, Jordanians, and Israelis. Each community is partnered with a neighbouring community on the other side of the border/political divide to work on common water issues. On the local level, GWN works with community members to improve their water situation through education and awareness activities, and urban development projects. On the regional level, GWN works to encourage sustainable water management through information sharing, dialogue, and cooperative ventures.

Vision\Mission: |
EcoPeace / Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME) is a unique organization that brings together Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli environmentalists. Our primary objective is the promotion of cooperative efforts to protect our shared environmental heritage. In so doing, we seek to advance both sustainable regional development and the creation of necessary conditions for lasting peace in our region. The people and wildlife of our region are dependent on many of the same natural resources. Shared surface and sub-surface freshwater basins, shared seas, common flora and fauna species and a shared air-shed are some of the characteristics that necessitate regional cooperation. The Jordan River Basin, a major source of freshwater in a water scarce region, the Gulf of Aqaba, a highly sensitive eco-system giving life to arguably the world's most beautiful coral reef, and the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth and the world's saltiest non-shallow body of water, are all examples of unique shared eco-systems in the region which necessitate regional cooperation if they are to be preserved.

| |
Uniqueness : |
EcoPeace / Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME) is unique in the sense that we are the only regional environmental organization in the area, comprised of Israelis, Jordanians and Palestinians all working in one organization. With our focus being on transboundary water resources, and with offices in Amman, Bethlehem and Tel Aviv, we are thus uniquely positioned to work on these issues. Our strength lies in our organizational structure, where we send out the same message to each country but with a Palestinian advocating that position to other Palestinians, an Israeli to other Israelis and a Jordanian to other Jordanians.
