Need :

The JSPCA shelter in Atarot is the only shelter in Jerusalem and surrounding areas. Stray, abandoned, injured and abused animals have a chance for rehabilitation and rehomeing. Feral cats not only benefit from the often vital lifeline they receive by the JSPCA when hungry or injured but also by the spay/neuter campaign. Volunteers trap, transport, and release feral cats after being spayed/neutered. These animals live happier and healthier lives.

Uniqueness :

The JSPCA shelter is crucial in a city with so many different populations. Each population has a unique animal welfare background. It is important to not only help the individual animals in need but to educate the city's population to pet care responsibility, spay/neutering, and compassion for the animals who share the city with them. The JSPCA shelter volunteers are ambassadors for these animals who have no voice.

An additional function of the JSPCA is the reuniting of missing pets with their loving owners. The shelter often houses lost animals while the volunteers work tirelessly to find their owners. The JSPCA receives countless panicked phone calls from owners who turn to us for help.

Project description :

The JSPCA shelter in Atarot is home to approximately 400 animals at any given time. These animals are in desperate need of food, shelter, and medical care. All of which are provided to them by the generous support of donors and volunteers. Finding permanent loving homes for each of them is the ultimate goal but the process is often lengthy. The Atarot Shelter Fund will support the shelter for the coming year.

In addition the spay/neuter campaign run by the shelter volunteers hopes to educate the public about the need to take responsibility for their pets. The more pet owners who spay/neuter their animals the fewer stray or unwanted puppies and kittens with need to be taken in at the shelter. Education about the feral cat populations need for spay/ neuter is also included in this campaign.

Vision\Mission:

The JSPCA is dedicated to improving the lives of Jerusalem's stray, unwanted, injured, and abused animals. Our shelter is the only refuge for homeless animals in Jerusalem and the surrounding areas. These desperate animals are provided with food, medical care and a chance to find permanent loving homes. The goal of the JSPCA is, through education on responsible pet care and our spay/neuter campaign, to eliminate the need for our shelter that homes thousands of animals a year.
The JSPCA believes in achieving its goals by fulfilling the immediate needs of the animals while simultaneously working towards prevention. The Atarot shelter, the clinic, the spay/neuter campaign, the adoption campaign, and the educational outreach are all components of our work on behalf of animal welfare.
The Atarot shelter houses around 400 animals at any given time, mostly dogs and cats. Animals come to us from within the city of Jerusalem, Arab villages, neighboring cities, kibutim, army bases, rescues by our volunteers, and animals left at the shelter gates. For every animal getting a new home there is another one with a sad story coming in to the shelter. We provide not only food and shelter but medical care and rehabilitation if needed. Many volunteers foster animals in need of the most rehabilitation.
The adoption campaign is a vital aspect of the JSPCA mission. The JSPCA strives to find the right home for each animal that will provide them with a permanent loving situation.
The 24 hour clinic run by the JSPCA in Jerusalem provides emergency care to owned and stray animals alike. It is an entry point for Jerusalem citizens to the JSPCA and gives them a place to support the work of the organization within the city.
The spay/neuter campaign is the only resolution to the feral cat overpopulation in Jerusalem. The JSPCA offers low cost spaying/neutering for feral cats including trapping and additional medical care when needed. In addition every animal that resides in the shelter or is adopted from us has been spayed or neutered.
The JSPCA educational campaign focuses on teaching the importance of spay/neuter, pet ownership responsibility, adoption, and animal welfare. Education is the best tool we have to provide a better life for all animals.

  Goal :

The objectives of the JSPCA include:
Maintaining a shelter to home stray and unwanted animals until rehomed;
Encouraging the spaying and neutering of all dogs and cats (including feral cats);
Educating the public to be responsible pet owners;
Developing public awareness for animal welfare;
Rescuing injured, abandoned and abused animals;
Preventing violence towards animals;
Finding homes for animals that are in need of adoption;
Providing 24 hour emergency care through the JSPCA clinic

  Uniqueness :

The JSPCA operates the only shelter in the a greater Jerusalem area and the only 24 hour emergency clinic. We function in a area of diverse populations with limited animal welfare culture.
The JSPCA is run by a team of dedicated volunteers with limited professional staff and limited state funding. The volunteers work round the clock to provide a better life for these animals that have nowhere else to turn.
