L'Chaim Campaign

Goal:

The L'Chaim Campaign is aimed at raising funds that will enable us to continue our interreligious work in 2010. Our mission is to harness the teachings and values of the three monotheistic religions into sources of reconciliation and peaceful coexistence, based on the understanding that religions should not be part of the problem, but rather can be part of the solution. ICCI's work focuses primarily on religious leaders, women and young adults, youth and educators, in the belief that these three groups can serve as catalysts and spread the message of peace to the general population. ICCI deeply believes that, when people of faith join together in mutual understanding and respect to achieve the common goal of living together in harmony, their efforts will help reduce the violence and increase the chances that people in the region will learn to live in peace.

Need :

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to be ongoing and violent with no political solution in the immediate offing. This has led to regression and retreat by both communities with each national group mired in its own narrative of the conflict, and with less and less people-to-people contact.

For many in this region, separation and other pressures that lead to polarization and dehumanization seem to be irresolvable, especially for today's young people. Differences of religious, cultural and national identity serve not to enrich the environment, nor to build a pluralistic society, but to distinguish people from one another and drive them apart.
The tensions of the conflict in the West Bank and Gaza are also very much felt inside Israel among Jewish and Palestinian citizens of the state. What happens to Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank has profound implications for the way Palestinians inside Israel think and feel about the conflict.
At this time, it is important for organizations such as ICCI to create new strategies and innovative programs that can combat despair and offer a sense of hope. At this difficult time in the world economic crisis, ICCI's funding resources have become severly limited due to the ongoing economical crisis. It is crucial for us to raise more money, via the L'Chaim Campaign and other means, in order to continue and further develop our work in this field.

Uniqueness :

ICCI`s programs are based on core values that reflect profound humanitarian principles:

* Moving from Dialogue to Action: the programs combine facilitated dialogue, study, and action projects which demonstrate to the wider community the tangible benefits to be gained from working together towards common goals.

* Addressing the Conflict: all programs promote relationship-building, including frank and open exchanges of perspectives on subjects related to the local and regional conflict.

* Focus on Communities rather than Individuals: participants are carefully recruited based on their potential to impact their respective religious communities.

* Long-Term Programs and Relationships: all major programs are long-term so as to encourage the building of lasting relationships.

* Religion as part of the Solution: by utilizing interreligious textual study as an educational tool, ICCI promotes religion as a means of bringing people closer together.

ICCI's potential impact is greater than that of any one institution, given its status as a coalition of organizations with many hundreds of members in each organization and its success in recruiting influential religious and cultural leaders and opinion-makers to participate in systematic and substantive special programs.

The unique aspect of the L'Chaim Campaign, aimed at raising money for ICCI's general operation and programs budget, is in its focus on small donations from a wider circle of supporters than we have normally addressed before. Little by little, we hope that these contributions will help us push forward in 2010.

Project description :

ICCI's L'Chaim Campaign, launched in December 2009, is a small gifts e-donations campaign to raise money for ICCI's interreligious work in 2010. The idea is that each person will donate a relatively small sum, in multiples of 18 ("Chai"). We believe that every little counts! By contributing to ICCI through this campaign, you can support our vision and work for peace through dialogue and education in Israel and the region.

Vision\Mission:

Religiously-motivated violence has been a significant deterrent to the progress of the Middle East peace process, and yet little to no attention has been paid to the Israeli and Palestinian religious communities, and few attempts have been made to utilize religion as a tool for peace and reconciliation.

The mission of the Interreligious Coordinating Council in Israel (ICCI) is, therefore, to harness the teachings and values of the three Abrahamic faiths and transform religion`s role from a force of division and extremism into a source of reconciliation, coexistence, and understanding. To accomplish this, ICCI works with youth, women, educators, and religious leaders to promote Jewish-Arab coexistence and peace-building projects in Israel.

Founded in January 1991, ICCI is now Israel`s best-known and most-respected interreligious organization. As an umbrella organization, ICCI comprises 75 Christian, Palestinian/Muslim, and Jewish institutions, including Jewish-Arab coexistence organizations, museums, universities, and other inter-religious organizations.? ICCI also serves as the Israel chapter of Religions for Peace (WCRP) and as a member of the International Council of Christians and Jews (ICCJ).

ICCI`s current major programs include:
  • KEDEM Voices for Religious Reconciliation -- a group of religious leaders from Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities who engage in a systematic and substantive effort to know one another, study each other`s sacred texts, learn to work together, and search together for new and innovative ways of bringing about interreligious and inter-communal reconciliation.
  • Women as Catalysts for Peace a dialogue group which uses personal narratives to discuss religious, cultural and national issues.
  • Youth Leadership Development: Face to Face / Faith to Faith ? an annual dialogue and leadership program for Jewish, Christian and Muslim youth, which includes attending a summer camp in the U.S., run by Auburn Theological Seminary of New York.
  • Jerusalem Interreligious Young Adult Forum -- a newly recruited group of students studying at different colleges and universities in Jerusalem, in partnership with a Palestinian youth organization based in East Jerusalem.
  • Collective Memory and Nation-Building -- a new program for Arab and Jewish students in Israel, focusing on the theme of collective memory and religious and national consciousness. Both Palestinian and Jewish identity intertwine religious and national elements in their narratives such that it is vital to bring both aspects into the dialogue process.
ICCI`s programs are based on core values that reflect profound humanitarian principles:
  • Moving from Dialogue to Action: the programs combine facilitated dialogue, study, and action projects which demonstrate to the wider community the tangible benefits to be gained from working together towards common goals.
  • Addressing the Conflict: all programs promote relationship-building, including frank and open exchanges of perspectives on subjects related to the local and regional conflict.
  • Focus on Communities rather than Individuals: participants are carefully recruited based on their potential to impact their respective religious communities.
  • Long-Term Programs and Relationships: all major programs are long-term so as to encourage the building of lasting relationships.
  • Religion as part of the Solution: by utilizing interreligious textual study as an educational tool, ICCI promotes religion as a means of bringing people closer together.

  Goal :

In the short term, we envision the personal transformation and empowerment of a growing cadre of influential Christian, Jewish and Muslim local religious and cultural leaders.

In the medium term, under their leaders? guidance, the members of the different faith communities will work together to address issues of common concern, such as poverty relief, the empowerment of women, and environmental protection.

In the long term, as non-violence and mutual cooperation among local Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities becomes a model for society as a whole; we envisage a transforming of the public discourse which will empower peace-builders in the region to effect lasting change.

  Uniqueness :
ICCIs unique mission has established the ICCI as the most well-respected, well-known interreligious organization in Israel. ICCI organizes and facilitates interreligious dialogue groups, workshops, public forums, seminars, and conferences for religious leaders, women, young adults, youth and educators, throughout Israel, including in both East and West Jerusalem. ICCIs innovative and ground-breaking programs bring together people from different faith communities to learn how to live in peace. ICCI recruits influential religious and cultural leaders and opinion-makers to participate in its programs, and also serves as a coalition of organizations with many hundreds of members in each organization.
